The Southwest Biostratigraphic Institute is the Centennial Museum's center for research and teaching in invertebrate paleontology. The center was founded by Dr. David V. LeMone, the current director.
Collections include material collected by Lloyd "Speedy" Nelson in the earlier years of the last century and by Dr. LeMone since 1964. The Institute currently is involved in recurating fossil invertebrates housed by the Institute, those within the Centennial Museum's main building, and those in the Department of Geological Sciences teaching collection. About 8,000 specimens have been recurated to date. Decisions concerning permanent housing of the collection have not yet been made.
