The whip scorpions, or vinegaroons, often are thought to be deadly—they are not. They might give a good pinch and an odor of acetic acid, otherwise known as vinegar, but that is a long way from deadly. The "whip" that gives the whip scorpions their common name, is sensory in nature, not a defensive organ.
