This website offers you an extensive virtual tour of the many resources available at the Museum and Gardens, plus many links to other resources about the Greater Chihuahuan Desert, including educational materials and an online course. The Museum and Gardens are part of the University of Texas at El Paso, and also serve the binational community of the Chihuahuan Desert region; the Museum was established in 1936, and the Gardens were dedicated in 1999. The Museum’s permanent exhibits focus on the natural and cultural history of the Chihuahuan Desert region, the largest desert in North America, which extends from central New Mexico deep into Mexico. The extensive stored collections of the Centennial are available for scholarly research. In the temporary galleries the Museum presents a wide range of exhibits on themes related to border life and culture, both natural and human. These special shows may be part of collaborations with other UTEP departments, with other El Paso museums, national museums such as the Smithsonian, or even international agencies. The Museum and Gardens sponsor a number of educational activities for both children and adults. The FloraFest takes place every year on the last weekend in April, with a presentation on native plants on the Friday night, followed by a sale of native plants on Saturday and Sunday. Volunteers support these and other Museum and Gardens activities in many ways; if you‘d like to be part of this, please call (915)747-5565 and ask to speak to Kaye Mullins.
